How to Prepare for Your Permanent Makeup Appointment

Getting ready for your permanent makeup appointment is an essential part of achieving beautiful, long-lasting results. Whether you’re receiving eyebrow tattooing, lip blushing, or eyeliner, following these simple guidelines will ensure your skin is in the best condition for the procedure and your healing process is as smooth as possible.

What You’ll Learn

1 Week Before Your Appointment:

  • Avoid blood thinners such as aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, and vitamin E (unless prescribed by a doctor).
  • No alcohol for at least 48–72 hours prior — it can cause excess bleeding and poor pigment retention.
  • Pause retinoids and exfoliants — stop using Retin-A, glycolic acid, or other active skincare ingredients near the treatment area.
  • Skip facial treatments like chemical peels, laser, microneedling, or waxing near the area being treated.
  • Avoid sunburns or tanning — skin must be healthy and not irritated for best results.

2-3 Days Before:

  • Moisturize your skin to keep it hydrated and healthy.
  • Avoid tweezing, waxing, or tinting the area (brows or lashes) — your artist will shape accordingly.
  • Hydrate well by drinking plenty of water — hydrated skin heals better.

The Day Before:

  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol to minimize bleeding and sensitivity.
  • No intense workouts — excessive sweating before or after can disrupt healing.
  • Let us know if you’re sick — rescheduling while unwell is best for you and your artist.

The Day of Your Appointment:

  • Eat a light meal beforehand — this prevents feeling faint or lightheaded.
  • Arrive with a clean face — no makeup, lash extensions, or skincare products on the treatment area.
  • Dress comfortably — you’ll be lying down for a while, so wear something cozy.

Important Notes:

  • Not a candidate if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Let us know if you’ve had previous permanent makeup — healed or partially faded pigment may affect design and results.
  • If you’re prone to cold sores and are receiving lip blush, you must take an antiviral (like Valtrex) 2–3 days before and after your appointment to prevent an outbreak.
  • If you are getting eyeliner tattooed, please stop using your lash serum two weeks prior to and remember, you must remove your lash extensions.
